Landscaping in Box Hill, Melbourne

Box Hill, postcode 3128, sits at the heart of the City of Whitehorse.

The council takes its name from the Whitehorse Hotel, which opened on the corner of Whitehorse and Elgar Roads in 1853. The suburb got its own name in 1861, when the first postmaster named the new post office after Box Hill in Surrey, England, near where he was born. Firewood cutting came first, then orchards and vineyards. When the railway arrived in 1882, so did the brickworks. One old clay pit became the Surrey Dive, now Surrey Park.

That brickmaking history tells you what’s under most Box Hill gardens: clay. It packs down hard, holds water in winter and sets like concrete in summer. That’s why new lawns here so often fail without proper ground prep first.

Mario is based just down the road in Vermont South, and every job is handled by him directly. No subcontractors, no random crews.

New Lawn & Garden Edging - Howard Street, Box Hill

This small Box Hill backyard had been bare dirt for a while. The owners had tried to get a lawn going a couple of times, but the ground was compacted hard and nothing had taken. With no edging, the dirt, leaf litter and garden beds had all run into each other.

We started by turning the whole area over with a tiller to break up the compacted soil. Then we levelled it out and put in timber edging to separate the lawn from the garden beds. Once that was set, we laid fresh turf right up to the edges and around the patio.

The owners now have a proper lawn with clean edges and a backyard they can actually use.
