Landscaping in Vermont, Melbourne
Vermont, postcode 3133, sits in the City of Whitehorse between Mitcham, Forest Hill and Ringwood.
It started out as LL Vale and became Vermont in 1885. With no railway, it stayed an orchard district for decades. In 1923 locals even started their own bus to Mitcham station, said to be Victoria’s first community bus service. The orchards gave way to housing through the 1950s and 60s, which is why so many Vermont homes sit on generous, established blocks with mature trees.
There’s still plenty of bush close by. Bellbird Dell, a long strip of remnant bushland and wetland between Canterbury Road and Burwood Highway, is home to native birds and frogs, and even wild-growing Pink Heath, Victoria’s floral emblem. On the eastern edge, Dandenong Creek is being replanted with indigenous species. Underneath, like much of Melbourne’s east, the soil is typically a lighter topsoil over heavier clay, which can sit wet through winter. Drainage and soil prep matter here.

Front Yard Reset - Denis Street, Vermont
The front garden had run down over the years. The timber sleepers around the garden beds were rotting, the lawn was patchy, and the trees and plants had grown well past where they should be. The join between the front steps and the grass had also broken down.
Mario stripped out every old sleeper and replaced them all with new ones. He pruned and cleaned up every tree and plant, then laid fresh black mulch through the beds. Out front, he put in a new sprinkler system and laid new turf over it. The gap between the steps and the lawn was rebuilt with concrete and recycled pavers, so there’s now a clean, solid edge. To finish, he pressure washed the porch, steps and driveway.
It’s the same garden, just reset. It’s got clean lines, healthy plants, a lawn that waters itself, and an entry that looks looked-after again.
